Pootukkal Pottalum

The song "Pootukkal Pottalum" from Kshatriyan is a very nice Waltz song by Ilaiyaraaja. I just love the first interlude. Nice western classical elements in the interlude. The interlude is mainly dominated by a solo violin accompanied aptly by an orchestra. Then the music changes color, takes you to different unseen places and brings you back to the song with the piano rhythm, all within around 30 secs.

I don't know the technical aspects of this song. I know the song is basically in E minor, but nothing much other than that. Drop in your views of this song in the comments section.

  1. Ramesh,

Good to know some technical details from you. Can you please tell me if the song "Minmini Paarvaigal" from Julie Ganapathy also falls into the same category - Waltz.

  5. Raja has done many Waltz based compositions. In my view, his best is 'Vandhal Vandhal Rajakumari' from Oru Ooril Oru Rajakumari. It is an amazing Waltz arrangement and a great chorus arrangement too.

    Cheers

  6. @ Vinith:
"My Favorite Things" has very little resemblance to "Pootukkal". The fact that both are set to Waltz and on a Harmonic Minor is like saying you found two shaven heads in Thirupathi.. (Just kidding.. My points is that you might find so many songs with this two traits); However I agree with you that the style at "When the dog bites.. when the bee stings" of 'My favorite things' is same as "Kattu kaaval".. But then the areas around it dont fit and former is minor chord and the later is major making the "inspiration" factor ignorable.

In my opinion "Thannanam thaanannam" (Yathra) is a much more direct inspiration of "My favorite things"..in some places a 1 to 1 match.. However its inspired with a certain element of originality that its an tribute to the source. (i.e., the way Raaja takes the cue and constructs a full fledged song with a Indian Tabla based strong melody oriented stanza etc..); I am not deliberating here to show Raaja in bright light.. I agree that the authenticity is compromised a bit.. But its not a copy by any yardstick.. rather an adoption in its true form..

    With Love

  9. I was watching Sound of Music for the first time, and when I got to "Favorite things" song, parts of it sounded like "pootukkaL pOttAlum". On Googling ""pootukkaL pOttAlum" inspiration - landed on this page. Glad that I was not alone in the similarity. Yes, the lines "kattukkaaval" is the *only* resemblance. Truly an "inspiration" and not a copy since it brings in the same feelings, but the tune is completely different!
